The reasons people want to buy an electric vehicle are changing. In just 2 years the way consumers understand BEVs has totally transformed. If you're in the business of selling cars, electrifying homes or planning for the energy transition, that shift matters more than almost anything else right now.
For the past two and a half years, our HETS study has been asking 4,000 homeowners an open question every three months: "What do you think are the most important benefits of owning an electric vehicle?" Critically, we've not prompted them for a particular answer - they just tell us - top of mind - what they think, in their own words. We then code their responses using AI across 28 consistent categories. Every wave of research there are two clear winner responses: EVs are environmentally beneficial, and EVs save you money.
Since we started polling in August 2023, we've seen environmental mentions dominate but over the last 18 months they've dropped by about 15 points, from around 60% to around 46% in November 2025. In terms of financial benefits, we've seen spontaneous mentions rise from 26% to 43% over the same period. Extrapolating forward, were these trends to continue, we'd see the lines cross by the end of this year. This marks a key inflection point where BEVs are primarily a cost play.
For car makers, this should be a big deal. This analysis strips away short-term promotions, press commentary and legislation, and looks purely at top-of-mind homeowner sentiment. The groundswell is real and has been steady and sustained.
The latest wave uploads to HETS next week. There’s vastly more detail available to HETS subscribers. Our members have immediate access to a powerful dashboard covering 44,000 interviews across 11 waves of research. It allows you to track the entire demand side - not just the tech, but the energy suppliers, tariffs, and flexibility services that homeowners are actually choosing. Happy to walk through the data with anyone who's interested.
Notes
HETS UK (Homeowner Electrification Tracking Study) from Electrify Research.
n≈600–1,000 per wave - data weighted to be nationally representative of UK homeowners.
Results based on unprompted responses to the question: “What do you think are the most important benefits of owning an electric vehicle?”
Coding completed via AI-assisted classification validated against human-coded benchmarks.
Projections based on linear extrapolation of historical trends and are indicative only.
We code to 28 “child” codes. These are the two biggest parent codes. HETS also captures drawbacks and drivers and barriers to purchase for BEVs, solar and heat pumps.
